Merri continues to participate in many programs that promote kids health.

Merri’s approach revolves around six key principles:

For healthy bodies and teeth, children need to drink water and limit sweet drinks. Reduce sweet drinks including fruit juice, fruit drinks, soft drinks, flavoured mineral water, cordials, sport drinks, energy drinks and flavoured milk.
 Turn off, switch to play

Turn Off, Switch to Play
Screen activities include watching television, computers and playing electronic games. Children need active play! So limit screen time, and make sure they have time to be active every day.

Fruit and vegetables provide essential nutrients for healthy eyes, skin, hair and protect against many diseases. Colourful and crunchy vegetables and fruit should be an enjoyable part every child’s day.

Being physically active promotes many benefits for children including increased fitness, coordination and motor skills, confidence, self-esteem and academic performance.

Foods and drinks high in fat, sugar and salt should only be consumed ‘sometimes’. Too many ‘sometimes’ foods replace nutritious foods children need and may lead to health problems.

Stride and Ride
Walking and riding to school is a great way to get fit and prepare children for a day of learning. Fewer cars on the road are also better for the environment and make the roads around services and schools safer.

 

Merri CCC & K provides all children with a healthy balanced diet that is safe and nutritious. We have a strong emphasis on whole foods as well as fresh food.  The Centre’s qualified cook, along with all the Centre’s staff and management, comply with all relevant food preparation and handling legislation and guidelines. The Centre supports and follows the Australian Dietary Guidelines for children and adolescents and the Australian Nutrition Foundation’s Healthy Diet Pyramid.

Our cook holds a level 2-food safety supervisor certificate and regularly undertakes additional training. All staff have annual in-house training on safe food practices and hold a basic food handling practices certificate. Our cook also regularly plans and reviews menus, as well as researching further information on current and up to date food practices and options. We provide various combinations of spoon/fork/finger foods for all children. Water is offered as a primary drink and we ensure children have adequate access to clean and fresh water at regular intervals.

When planning meals (breakfast, morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea), our cook prepares, stores and cooks food in accordance to the Food Safety Act. We consider food choices very carefully, to provide a menu that is sensitive to the children’s ages, needs as a group and as individuals, and reflects the cultural differences that exist within our community.

We adhere to all aspects of the:

  • Centre’s Food Safety Program
  • The ‘Start Right Eat Right’ Award
  • National Quality Standard – Health, Nutrition & Wellbeing
  • Go For Your Life Program,

The meals provided meet the 50% recommended daily intakes for children in long day care centres:

  • Milk groups are offered in three serves
  • Bread and cereals in two serves
  • Fruit & vegetables in one to 1 ½ serves
  • Meat and alternatives in one serve
  • Fats and oils in half a  serve.

Examples of a serve:

  • Bread & Cereals = 1 slice of bread & ½ cup of cooked pasta
  • Fruit & Vegetables = 1 small apple & ½ cup of cooked raw vegetables & ¼ dried fruit
  • Meat & Alternatives = 40g lean meat, fish, chicken or ½ cup cooked legumes
  • Milk & Dairy = ½ cup whole milk, 100g yoghurt,  15g of cheese
  • Fats & Oils = 1 tablespoon oil.

Physical Activity

Children are naturally curious and love to play. Outdoor play offers children more of a chance to explore, play freely, and learn about how they fit into a range of play spaces. Children get the most out of play when they are able to take control of and create their own play. Despite some adult fears, outdoor play is vital for children’s social and personal growth, and should be made part of every child’s day.

Active outdoor play generally includes chances to:

  • explore and test limits, such as learning to deal with increasing heights
  • use all the muscles of the body, such as skipping and dancing
  • practice and improve skills, such as balance, strength, and coordination
  • create imaginary games and activities
  • be physically and mentally challenged in new or favourite play areas
  • share and play with others
  • use a variety of play items, such as different sized balls, mud, or buckets
