DESCRIPTION:Every May 26 in Australia\, National Sorry Day reminds the colonist-descended people of the nation to remember the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Why? During the 20th century\, Indigenous children were forcibly removed from their families to be “assimilated” into white Australian culture. They are known as the “Stolen Generations.” It took several Australian government administrations coming and going before an apology was officially offered to the Indigenous Australians\, but it finally was made official\, and actions are still being undertaken to this day to repair the damage caused by tearing native families apart.

This is a time for growth\, reflection\, and commitment to walking together. \nAustralia’s history of reconciliation is not a linear one\, we have made great strides and experienced disappointing setbacks. \nTwenty-five years ago\, Corroboree 2000 brought together Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous leaders in a historic call for reconciliation. We continue that work in 2025\, inviting all Australians to join us in Bridging Now to Next – building a more united and respectful nation.

DESCRIPTION:Mabo Day is celebrated on June 3\, the date that the High Court of Australia made the Mabo Decision. This holiday is one of great significance in Australia\, particularly among the Torres Strait Islander people. Mabo Day is named after Eddie Mabo\, the activist who led efforts to reform rights for Indigenous Australians. Mabo Day celebrates their unique connection to the land and the legal claims that led to the Australian parliament passing the Native Title Act. Though Mabo passed away before learning the decision of his case\, the results of his campaign are still celebrated by Australians today.

DESCRIPTION:A task sheet for each of the above dates will be available via the school interviews online booking system https://www.schoolinterviews.com.au/ \, please use the code wex6h to book. \nPlease note that a commitment of 3 hours (i.e.\, the whole duration of the working bee) is required.  The aim of each working bee is to have at least 3 staff members and up to 10 parents present. \nWorking bees are a great way to get involved with the centre and your community.  They also help us keep our maintenance costs down.  The working bee levy will be refunded to all families that attend.  You are more than welcome to attend more than one working bee per calendar year; however\, the working bee levy will only be refunded once. \nFrom time-to-time parents that are unable to attend a working bee may be able to do another job or task that can count towards a working bee. \nPlease see Helen or Kathleen for more details. \nFor obvious safety reasons children are unable to attend working bees. \nWhen taking part in working bees we ask that you always be aware of your own health and safety and the health and safety of others.

As an award-winning Australian picture book illustrator\, Jess’ work encourages children to imagine\, explore\, and create their own adventures. \n2025 is also a milestone year for us as we celebrate 80 years of Children’s Book Week! For 8 decades\, CBCA has been dedicated to inspiring young minds to journey through the countless worlds that books offer. Jess’ imaginative artwork reflects this mission perfectly\, encouraging children to set off on adventures through time\, lands\, and imagination.
