DESCRIPTION:The day has been celebrated since 1788\, when Governor Arthur Phillip declared a holiday to mark the birthday of King George III. Until 1936 it was held on the actual birthday of the Monarch\, but after the death of King George V\, it was decided to keep the date at mid-year. \nOn that day the “King’s Birthday honours list” is released naming new members of the Order of Australia and other Australian honours. This occurs on the date observed in the Eastern States\, not the date observed in Western Australia.

SUMMARY:Mabo Day
DESCRIPTION:Mabo Day is celebrated on June 3\, the date that the High Court of Australia made the Mabo Decision. This holiday is one of great significance in Australia\, particularly among the Torres Strait Islander people. Mabo Day is named after Eddie Mabo\, the activist who led efforts to reform rights for Indigenous Australians. Mabo Day celebrates their unique connection to the land and the legal claims that led to the Australian parliament passing the Native Title Act. Though Mabo passed away before learning the decision of his case\, the results of his campaign are still celebrated by Australians today. \nHISTORY OF MABO DAY\nOn May 20\, 1982\, a group of Meriam plaintiffs led by Eddie Marbo filed a legal claim for ownership of Murray Island in Australia. This was the beginning of a movement that would go on to change land ownership laws in Australia\, restoring the rights of Indigenous peoples and righting wrongs committed centuries ago by the British Crown. In the end\, on June 3\, 1992\, the High Court of Australia passed a judgment in favor of the Meriam people — a judgment that came to be known as the ‘Mabo Decision’. \nThe Mabo Decision overturned centuries-old colonial laws\, which stated that all land belonged to the Crown because the Indigenous people did not use it “in a manner that indicates possession”. This was patently untrue of course\, for Indigenous Australians had been fishing\, farming\, and occupying these lands for tens of thousands of years before the arrival of the British. They had their customs and laws dictating land ownership and use. \nThanks to Mabo’s spirited initiative\, the Australian parliament would go on to pass the Native Title Act in 1993\, a framework that incorporates the culture and customs of Indigenous people when it comes to land claims.

DESCRIPTION:A task sheet for each of the above dates will be available via the school interviews online booking system https://www.schoolinterviews.com.au/ \, please use the code hsdu6 to book. \nPlease note that a commitment of 3 hours (i.e.\, the whole duration of the working bee) is required.  The aim of each working bee is to have at least 3 staff members and up to 10 parents present. \nWorking bees are a great way to get involved with the centre and your community.  They also help us keep our maintenance costs down.  The working bee levy will be refunded to all families that attend.  You are more than welcome to attend more than one working bee per calendar year; however\, the working bee levy will only be refunded once. \nFrom time-to-time parents that are unable to attend a working bee may be able to do another job or task that can count towards a working bee. \nPlease see Helen or Kathleen for more details. \nFor obvious safety reasons children are unable to attend working bees. \nWhen taking part in working bees we ask that you always be aware of your own health and safety and the health and safety of others.

DESCRIPTION:Every May 26 in Australia\, National Sorry Day reminds the colonist-descended people of the nation to remember the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Why? During the 20th century\, Indigenous children were forcibly removed from their families to be “assimilated” into white Australian culture. They are known as the “Stolen Generations.” It took several Australian government administrations coming and going before an apology was officially offered to the Indigenous Australians\, but it finally was made official\, and actions are still being undertaken to this day to repair the damage caused by tearing native families apart.
