DESCRIPTION:Many Jewish communities in Australia observe the first day of Hanukkah\, which marks the start of Hanukkah\, also known as Chanukah or Festival of Lights. Hanukkah is an eight-day Jewish observance that remembers the Jewish people’s struggle for religious freedom. \nMany Jewish Australians start observing Hanukkah on the evening before on the first day of Hanukkah\, as many Jewish observances begin at sunset on the day before. The first day of Hanukkah is marked as the 25th day of the month of Kislev in the Jewish calendar. The Hanukkah period lasts for 8 days up until the second day of the month of Tevet. \nHanukkah (or Chanukah) often starts with special blessings at sunset the day before the 25th of Kislev. Many Jewish people light the hanukiah (or chanukkiyah)\, which is a type of candelabrum. Some state governments\, such as the New South Wales government\, have issued public statements to people celebrating Hanukkah\, reminding them to be aware of fire hazards associated with Hanukkah\, particularly with regard to using oil and lighting candles. \nHanukkah is a festive period for Jewish communities throughout Australia. Events involving meals\, socializing\, and games are held in venues such as parks and beaches. Meals that are offered during these events are often foods fried in olive oil\, such as potato cakes\, and different fried breads. It is also a time for gift-giving so some people order gift baskets to give to others. Hanukkah card games\, board games and books are sold in Australia. A toy known as the dreidel is widely popular among both children and adults during Hanukkah.

DESCRIPTION:Remembrance Day | Australian War Memorial (awm.gov.au) \n\n\n\n\nAt 11 am on 11 November 1918 the guns on the Western Front fell silent after more than four years of continuous warfare. The allied armies had driven the German invaders back\, having inflicted heavy defeats upon them over the preceding four months. In November the Germans called for an armistice (suspension of fighting) in order to secure a peace settlement. They accepted allied terms that amounted to unconditional surrender. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month attained a special significance in the post-war years. The moment when hostilities ceased on the Western Front became universally associated with the remembrance of those who had died in the war. This first modern world conflict had brought about the mobilisation of over 70 million people and left between 9 and 13 million dead\, perhaps as many as one-third of them with no known grave. The allied nations chose this day and time for the commemoration of their war dead. \nIn Australia on the 75th anniversary of the armistice in 1993 Remembrance Day ceremonies again became the focus of national attention. The remains of an unknown Australian soldier\, exhumed from a First World War military cemetery in France\, were ceremonially entombed in the Memorial’s Hall of Memory. Remembrance Day ceremonies were conducted simultaneously in towns and cities all over the country\, culminating at the moment of burial at 11 am and coinciding with the traditional two minutes’ silence. This ceremony\, which touched a chord across the Australian nation\, re-established Remembrance Day as a significant day of commemoration. \nFour years later\, in 1997\, Governor-General Sir William Deane issued a proclamation formally declaring 11 November to be Remembrance Day\, urging all Australians to observe one minute’s silence at 11 am on 11 November each year to remember those who died or suffered for Australia’s cause in all wars and armed conflicts.

DESCRIPTION:Many Australians celebrate Halloween\, which occurs annually on October 31. It is also known as All Hallows’ Eve and is the day before All Saints’ Day. Costume parties are held and many children go trick-or-treating around this time of the year. \nHalloween is not a public holiday. Businesses have normal opening hours. \nVarious Halloween activities and events were held on a smaller scale in Australia in the past but this occasion is becoming more popular across the country. More Australians are getting involved in celebrating Halloween\, which originated from the ancient Celtic harvest festival known as Samhain. Halloween is also remembered as All Hallows’ Eve among the Christian community.

Depart parklands and return back to Merri from the site via tram no later than 12.30pm).\nOption 2 Book yourself in for the tram ride to the Bush Kinder session site (ONLY) (arrive at Merri no later than 9.10am) travel with the group via tram to the site.  Feel free to leave the site once the group arrives at the site (i.e.\, Strettle Wetlands Reserve).\nOption 3 Book yourself in for the tram ride from the Bush Kinder session site (ONLY) (arrive at Strettle Wetlands Reserve\, Strettle St no later 11:45am and travel back to Merri from the site via tram\, arriving no later than 12.30pm).\nYou will need to bring the following items:\n\nWater Bottle\nHat\nClosed Toe Shoes\nSnack (optional and nut free)\nLong Sleeved Top\nDress to weather\nYour preferred sunscreen (or Generic Sunscreen is available for all volunteers)\nMyki card not required as we you will be able to travel on our group travel PTv pass.  Please note that you will require your own Myki if you are not traveling with the group.\n\n\n\n\n\nAll volunteers must have up to date Covid-19 vaccination and have a Working With Children Check.

DESCRIPTION:The Hindu religious holiday of Diwali\, also called Deepavali or the “Festival of Lights”\, is not an official public holiday in Australia. But it is has nonetheless grown in significance here as the number of Indian immigrants has increased over the years. Today\, there are private and public Diwali festivals held all over the country. \nThe Festival of Lights is a colourful and happy celebration. Families prepare their homes and themselves for the special festivities that symbolise the victory of spiritual goodness and the lifting of spiritual darkness. Fireworks displays are set off to drive away evil\, oil lamps are lit\, flower garlands are made\, candles float in bowls of water outside homes and sweets are shared as part of the festivities.
